Why Selective Trading Matters in XAUUSD Strategies
A decision not to trade is still a trading decision. Selective systems wait for predefined criteria, but fewer transactions do not automatically make a strategy conservative.
Activity is not the same as opportunity
Gold markets trade through many different conditions: trends, ranges, sudden news-driven moves and thin-liquidity periods. A strategy can be designed to act only when its configured signals appear. That means some sessions may have several entries while others have none.
Potential benefits of waiting
Waiting for qualifying conditions can reduce impulsive or unnecessary executions and may limit transaction costs associated with overtrading. This advantage depends on the quality of the signals and their execution; it is not proof that any particular entry has a high likelihood of success.
Why selectivity is not a complete risk framework
Risk does not end after the initial entry. Position size, correlated exposure, whether losing trades remain open, and how additional entries are managed can dominate outcomes. Even a system making few trades can lose a great deal if it uses significant leverage or holds adverse exposure for too long.
